How to set modern authentication in Office 365

Lukas BeranLukas Beran

If you want to use multi-factor authentication (MFA) in Office 365, you need to prepare your tenant first. If you want to use the comfort of signing in using your login and password with no need for application passwords in Outlook and other Office applications, you need modern authentication method in Office 365. You can read more about the modern authentication in this article at Office 365 support page.

Thanks to this modern authentication, users can simply sign in to Office applications (mainly Outlook) just using their username and password and then they verify this sign in via their phone. If you don’t setup this modern authentication, your users will have to use application passwords instead of their account passwords for signing in to Office application.

Modern authentication is allowed by default in SharePoint / OneDrive for Business, but it’s not allowed in Exchange Online and Skype for Business Online.
