Welcome to my blog! If you're looking for tutorials, hints or tips for IT, you're right here. You will find mostly articles on Microsoft products and technologies - operating systems, servers, virtualization, networks, management, but also the cloud. Sometimes I add some other interesting things.

Bulk change of Office 365 licenses

If you want to change a license for all of your users, you probably don’t want to change it manually. You can do it using PowerShell.

First you need to install Microsoft Online Services Sign-In Assistant and then Azure Active Directory Module for Windows PowerShell.

Now we can connect to Azure AD. In the first step we save our admin credentials:

Now we can connect using the saved credentials:

When we are signed, we can display active subscriptions using Get-MsolAccountSku.

Now we can change the licenses using PowerShell script Change Office 365 licenses in bulk, respecting the License Options from MS Script Center. In this script we set from what to what SKU we want to switch and we can also set what features we want to activate or if actually deactivated features should remain deactivated after the change.

But if I want to switch all users from old SKU to new SKU and activate all features, the script can be simplified like this:

In the script we must replace variables oldLicense and newLicense where you put your tenant name (in my example czptsws) and SKU name (in my example from E3 =  ENTERPRISEPACK to E5 =  ENTERPRISEPREMIUM). Now you can run the script and set Office 365 admin credentials.

My primary focus is the security of identities, devices and data in the cloud using Microsoft services, technologies and tools.
